Bianca Herlo, Dr. des.

Bianca is a senior design researcher with background in cultural and media studies. For several years she has been working at the Design Research Lab on participatory design projects, transdisciplinary and collaborative settings and on the conceptualization of a socially oriented Living Lab approach, at the intersection of the three dimensions People & the social dynamics (local actors), Space & urban processes (narratives), Technology & the appropriation of digital means (transformative tools, civic tech). In the research group Civic Infrastructures she focuses on social design, narrative design strategies and collective action.

Bianca studied communication in social and economic contexts with focus on audio-visual communication at the Berlin University of the Arts. She did her PhD on narrative strategies and the representation of memory in biographical documentaries. Since 2013 is a lecturer in design theory, design methods and design research.

Bianca leads several research projects on digitalization, bottom up processes and policy making: Bürger vernetzen Nachbarschaften. Bürgerwerkstätte in NRW (2016-2018, MBWSV) | Community Now? Conflicts, Interventions, New Publics (2013-2016, DIZF) | Mit-Mach-Stadt Brandis (2016-2017, SMI & Innovationskommune Brandis) | Besucherpartizipation im Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (2016-2017, DBU).
