Weekly DRLab Colloquium | ‘The Consequences of Theory: Who may Speak, and with Whose Words?’ Judith Butler, 1999

by Michelle Christensen and Florian Conradi

In this weeks colloquium we will take a look at Judith Bulter’s preface from the book “Gender Trouble” from 1990, and the rewritten preface from the new edition of the book in 1999, where she positions herself towards the critique and reception of the book since its original publication. We will do this not so much to situate how gender itself can be situated within design research. Rather, we will attempt to question what we can learn from some of the theoretical challenges and pitfalls of the gender field, as well as the very valuable raising of epistemological questions and attempts of actual strategy that arise from it.
